Finance for Freelancers // Weds 18 January 2023 // 10:00-12:00 // Online
The essential course for every freelancer – this course will take the you through everything you need to know to manage the business side of your freelance career in the film & TV industry.

The course will teach participants to understand the importance of good record keeping and working out how not to run out of cash, along with issues surrounding tax and national insurance. The learning covers types of self-employment and, the main financial regulations to be observed.

By the end of the course, you will have a good grounding in the major financial aspects of freelancing in the creative industries (film, TV, theatre, events) and how to make the most of what you earn and manage losses and debt.

Course content:
  • Engaging with money - Setting monthly budgets
  • What do we mean by ‘freelance’ - Employed vs self-employed; Ltd Company
  • Tax time-lines - how HMRC knows about your finances
  • How not to run out of money - Cash flow planning for freelancers
  • Where to find financial support
By the end of the workshop you should be able to:
  • Set monthly spending budgets
  • Understand the difference between PAYE freelancing and self-employed status
  • Meet current tax deadlines and be prepared for HMRC’s Making Tax Digital project
  • Draw up effective cash flow plans (spreadsheets provided)

Who is this course for?
This course is for freelance film & TV practitioners who work in all departments, and at all levels.

Tutor
This course will be delivered by highly experienced broadcaster, trainer and manager David Thomas of David Thomas Media.

  • As this is a workshop style course, there are a limited number of spaces available to allow participants the opportunity to interact and ask questions.
  • Priority for spaces will be given to eligible BECTU members.
