Fri 03Mar2017

How to work for yourself! Aimed at staff who are going through a redundancy process.

From 9:30am until 5pm

Venue: BBC Careerlink

BBC Careerlink, White City

'Setting up as a Sole Trader' is one of the workshops offered to BBC staff who are under threat of redundancy. It's aimed at people who are going to leave employment and set up on their own, either as a sole trader or through a partnership or limited company. Most of the content is also relevant to people who are going to freelance under PAYE.

We cover the following areas:

  • thinking differently about money and splitting finances
  • the definition of self-employment, and why it's very different from employment
  • sole trader vs limited company vs partnership
  • tax and national insurance implications
  • how to keep records without going mad
  • VAT - how it affects sole traders and other small businesses
  • planning your business idea
  • planning not to run out of cash

Participants receive plenty of materials during the workshop, as well as support by phone or email. Handouts and templates are available for download from davidthomasmedia.com.

Staff at BBC Worldwide and other BBC subsidiaries can usually attend under special arrangements with BBC Careerlink.
